Project: Saint-Gobain Abrasives (Oakey Non-Woven Hand Pads)

We’re excited to share a behind-the-scenes glimpse into a recent corporate video shoot that left our team at Turps Film buzzing with creative energy. Brace yourself for an exciting product promotion featuring an abundance of non-woven hand pads! (Trust me, they’re brilliant, and I didn’t even know about them before working with Saint-Gobain Abrasives!)

Curious about what a typical shoot looks like for our North East England-based video production agency? Incidentally, an agency that carries out shoots for clients all over the world? Well, wonder no more! Picture a bustling production set with lights, cameras, and a team of talented individuals ready to capture the essence of a business, product, or service.

On this occasion, our mission was clear—to showcase the versatility and functionality of these remarkable non-woven wonders for all your DIY and trade needs. Having previously produced a video for Saint-Gobain Abrasives’ sister brands Norton and Clipper, we were thrilled to jump back in for a new shoot under the Oakey brand. Trust us, we’ve got these shoots down to a tee, and they’re a lot of fun!

The Turps Team’s Challenge

To kick things off, we knew we had to create an atmosphere that truly highlighted the strengths of each product. That’s why we went all out with our lighting setups. Every hand pad received its moment in the spotlight, quite literally. For the lighting enthusiasts out there, we used our faithful Kino to provide a super soft key light. While it may not be the most powerful, we find it works exceptionally well for product work and studio shoots. We also incorporated the Nanlite Forza 500 with a Fresnel and some CTO to replicate sunlight as a stunning rim light. With this meticulously crafted lighting arrangement, we accentuated the texture, quality, and durability of these fantastic products.

But it wasn’t all about hero shots and glamour. We wanted to demonstrate how these hand pads excel in real-life scenarios. That’s why we planned various scenes where the products were put to the test, removing stubborn materials, providing the perfect surface for painting, and tackling tough cleaning tasks. We aimed to show just how indispensable these hand pads can be for your day-to-day projects.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. By tapping into previously shot video content, we optimized our time on set, allowing us to deliver not just one, but two additional promotional videos for our client. Talk about a win-win situation! This approach is something we encourage with all our clients. If we’re already on set, and if there’s a chance of a shorter day, we seize the opportunity to capture additional footage for future use.

Video production

Without sounding boastful, this production was a well-oiled machine. The schedule we meticulously planned ahead of the shoot was flawlessly executed on the day, down to the minute. We completed each scene on time and, of course, rewarded ourselves with an overwhelming amount of coffee and self-appraising comments like “Aye, that shot is class that like.”

Turps Film managed every aspect of the production day, from scouting locations that perfectly matched our client’s vision to arranging props, tools, costumes, and talent. It was a seamless collaboration that allowed us to focus solely on capturing the essence of these hand pads and bringing them to life on screen. The team at Saint-Gobain Abrasives took the time to explain how to best use each product and what scenarios their customers would like to see in the video.

Now, let’s talk about the role of technology in saving the day. Our client had the ability to remotely approve each shot before committing to the setup. This streamlined the decision-making process, ensuring everyone involved was on the same page and that we captured every scene in the ideal way. No risk of completing the shoot only to discover that a competitor’s product in the background needs to be rotoscoped out! The client can rest easy knowing what their end product will look like as it’s being shot! It’s incredible how technology bridges distances and brings people together, even when they’re miles apart.

So, was this video project a success? Absolutely!
