Ann Cleeves Documentary
The brief
Sheridan Design approached us on behalf of The Word, the National Centre for the Written Word in South Shields, to make a documentary about Ann Cleeves, author of the best-selling Shetland and Vera novels. Vera is set and filmed in the North East, and the ITV series has brought new readers to her books.
On the day
We did a few recces before settling on South Shields, where the exhibition was. The main interview was in one of the great halls of the historic civic centre, then we took Ann round the building and out to a few spots across the town for cutaways and short bits to camera.
She was an absolute joy. We had everything we needed with time to spare, so we kept filming, and she even shared a few tips for anyone who wants to start writing.
Our approach
The film covers her love of the North, her experiences and her life as a writer, a more digestible way to get to know her than a written interview.
